Initially the Client brief was to provide new shop frontages to an existing row of shops however, Dempsey Architects undertook a feasibility study to establish the suitability of a new build mixed use scheme incorporating apartments for the site.
This led to the preparation of a scheme design comprising 6 new shop units to replace 4 existing with 6 new duplex apartments above.
An existing untidy service yard will be transformed into a mews with access to the apartments separate from the shop fronts.
The scale of the building has been considered to provide a focal point (based around the retail core) on the expansive residential access route. Recessed and open balcony spaces to the front will animate the new elevation which has been designed to break up the mass of the building.
