Housing Development at Mowhan Road, Markethill

The site lies on the edge of Markethill and the context of Markethill has influenced the layout of the scheme and design of the houses.

The layout is based on a square off a square. Housing has been pushed around the edges of the site and arranged around a large central green space, much like a village square, rather than creating a standard cul-de-sac road arrangement. Off that space is a smaller more formal space defined by the strong edge of townhouses.

This helps give the housing and scheme as a whole a strong urban form reflective of the context of Markethill.

The buildings take simple unadorned forms and are also  reflective of the Irish countryside over which they look.

The development includes a mix of sizes and types of houses, such as large detached dwellings, semi detached dwellings, and townhouses.

The larger houses have been placed on Mowhan Road reflecting the importance of scale along the road as the urban grain breaks down to meet the countryside. On inspection some of these houses are actually semi detached dwellings. These have also been designed utilising the contours of the site.
